A cruise through Milford Fjord, New Zealand
For years, we’ve heard about the famous Milford Sound, and finally we are here! In fact, we are on Holland America’s MS Volendam, and cruising at this very moment through the Southwest fjordlands of New Zealand and navigating towards the Dusky Sound before sunset.
Our Cruise in New Zealand
Early this morning, we cruised through the serene waters of the first Fjord – the 10 mile long Milford Fjord, and saw the majestic peaks of Milford Sound including a sneak of its highest Mitre Glacial Peak. We got up close to spectacular waterfalls that were plunging hundreds of feet into the Fjord – dramatic and unforgettable! We continued to the second Sound – Doubtful Sound which is larger and more remote than the Milford Sound.
More from Holland America’s Travel Guide
According to Holland America’s Travel Guide Jeremy Elsasser, “Fjords are valleys carved by the tremendous pressure and power of glaciers during successive ice ages, which are then flooded as the ice melts and sea levels rise. The Spectacular Fjordland National Park, part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area, includes some of New Zealand’s most famous walks, including the best known, the Milford Track. The tracks, however, barely penetrate this raw, powerful region. The immensity of it can only really be appreciated from the air or from a a ship on the Sounds. “
We want to return to the famous “best walk in the world”, the Milford Trek, but for now walking the Promenade Deck on the MS Volendam while cruising through New Zealand’s fjords is a grand experience to see many of the Sounds! Put it on your list now for your next adventure the cruise of Milford Fjord in New Zealand is a must!
